German cockroaches are our specialty at Southwest Exterminators, we provide the only single service German cockroach eradication service in southern Utah. One aspect of our service includes the use of an IGR or Insect Growth Regulator. IGR services are also known as hormone therapy. It is an effective way to break an insects life-cycle. This break in their life-cycle provides quick and effective control of German cockroaches. The following blog explains the IGR we use in greater detail.
Gentrol is a growth regulator called hydroprene, and it works on insects that have gradual life cycles, such as cockroaches do. As a growth regulator it does not “kill” cockroaches, but instead its function is to disrupt the growth of the insect so that roaches that reach the adult stage are sterile, and if they cannot lay eggs then the population of roaches begins to die away. Egg capsules that are contacted may also be affected and not hatch.
Gentrol comes in 3 formulations – liquid that can be mixed with another pesticide and applied as a crack and crevice or a spot application (to kill adult roaches as well as affect the growth of those not killed); as an aerosol that can be used for crack and crevice or void applications; and as a plastic tab called Gentrol Point Source, that can be placed in hidden locations under counters or inside cabinets. Hydroprene has the interesting ability to move by itself, so if you treat a spot, or place the Point Source tab under a sink, the vapors of the hydroprene will actually move on their own to coat all surfaces within a couple of feet of that point. They may even move to inside cracks or small voids. This allows for less thorough coverage in the application initially.
So, Gentrol can be sprayed, fogged, or placed with the plastic tabs, and all will be effective. However, again, keep in mind that it DOES NOT KILL ROACHES. Instead, it causes the population to decrease by eliminating production of new roaches. It is an excellent supplement to other tools Southwest Exterminators uses in controlling German cockroaches.
