Termite Inspection Tool Belt: The Moisture Meters
Termites are elusive insects which dislike sunlight. They typically hide in places that are hard to visually inspect, such as behind sheetrock and within the lumber they are eating. There are multiple tools that Southwest Exterminators utilizes to inspect for termites. One key tool is the moisture meter which measures moisture content in building material. The follow is a short explanation of moisture meters and the usefulness in termite detection.
Moisture is a highly important factor that affects the potential for termite infestations. Using a moisture meter helps our Southwest Exterminators termite inspectors locate the moisture source and determine the amount of moisture present. These meters can measure moisture in building material such as wood, drywall, plaster, block, brick, siding and roofing materials. An increased amount of moisture in these materials can lead to termite infestation issues which are unsightly and can compromise the structural integrity of your home.
There are two different types of moisture meters that Southwest Exterminators utilizes the pin type and the pin-less type. Our inspectors will select the proper moisture meter depending on the type of material that needs to be tested.
The Pin-Less Type (non-invasive) moisture meters use a radio frequency transceiver to generate relative readings within the material. Pin-less moisture meters work much like a stud finder. It is less invasive than its counterpart and can be used to rapidly inspect a broad area or wall.
The Pin Type (invasive) moisture meter uses electrical conductance principles to measure the moisture level of the material between two electrodes. Pin type meters allow our inspectors to more accurately read moisture content because it penetrates deep through the surface and into the material you are testing. The drawback of pin type moister meter is it can leave small holes in some materials such as wood, drywall and plaster.
